Hunter (The Bad Disciples MC Book 2) Page 15
“Is the group meeting helping?” I asked him, while I filled in notes in my ledger. Marco was still panting from the exertion but now he was smiling as well.
“You know, I only agreed to go to those things to give Hunter and you some alone time. I figured that the more you thought I was accepting your help, the better my pal would have a chance with you,” he said, as I signed my name at the bottom of Marco’s progress report.
When I looked up at him, he was still smiling.
“That’s a messed-up reasoning, but I’m glad something made you do it, whatever it was,” I said, returning his smile. Marco seemed like he was in a much better mood today.
“Hunter isn’t the world’s biggest talker, but something tells me that the two of you have something going on,” he said and I walked up to him and placed my hands on my hips.
“I can’t divulge any of his secrets,” I said, my eyes twinkling with excitement. Only last night, I was lying in Hunter’s arms, falling asleep on his couch and then he woke me up in a few hours again to have sex. It was like we couldn’t get enough of each other. Marco could see the flush on my face and the wide grin that I couldn’t hide and he knew.
“You don’t have to say the actual words, I can figure it out myself thank you very much,” he said and I bit down on my lip to hide my thrill.
That was when the doors of the therapy room burst open and the man I was in love with, walked in. He was back in his leather jacket, hadn’t bothered to shave and the first thing I noticed about him was the patch. I didn’t care anymore. Hunter wore it like a badge of honor and that was all that mattered to me.
Instead of acknowledging his friend, Hunter walked straight up to me and pulled me into his arms for a long passionate kiss. His fingers weaved through my hair, his free hand shrugged up my scrubs so that the small of my back was on full display. Hunter was kissing me like there was nobody else in the room but us. When he finally pulled away from me, our lips parted with a loud smack.
“Whoa. Save her some breath, brother!” Marco commented and Hunter walked over to land a friendly thump on his shoulder.
“How is he doing, Kylie?” Hunter asked me, his blue eyes were twinkling and he had a happy grin on his face. Whatever it was that had put Hunter in a good mood, I was loving it! It was a fresh change from his usual broody gruff demeanor.
“A lot better now that I have evidence of what’s going on between you two!” Marco said, wheeling himself away from us like he wanted to give us some privacy.
Hunter smirked at his friend and then looked at me again.
“Are you off now?” he asked and I nodded my head, still reeling from the shock of seeing him so excited and happy.
“Marco was my last client of the day, as always. But I have to pick up Carter,” I said and Hunter came closer to me and drew me in with his hand on my jaw. He was peering straight into my eyes and I knew that something was up. There had to be a particular reason why he was so excited about everything.
“Okay, we’ll pick Carter up, drop him to your place and get your neighbor to babysit him for a few hours,” Hunter exclaimed and I furrowed my brows in confusion.
“Why? Where are we going to go?” I asked him.
“The Rusty Pelican,” he replied, throwing me into even more confusion.
“It’s a bar”
“We’re going to a bar? I’m not in the mood for a drink, Hunter,” I told him, eyeing him indulgently. I had an early shift the next morning and I couldn’t afford to be hungover. I knew that Hunter would keep me up all night, and if he didn’t, I would keep him up…I also didn’t want to be battling an alcoholic headache at the same time as struggling through no-sleep.
“We don’t have to drink. The Rusty Pelican is the place where we hang out…my MC,” he said, with that grin on his face spreading even more.
“You want to take me to your bar? You want me to meet your MC?” I asked and Hunter wasn’t nodding his head, he just continued to smile.
“My friends are there right now, telling Axel…he’s our president, about what happened…about you. He will want to meet you once he hears the story,” Hunter explained and I licked my lips in nervousness.
“He will want to meet me? The president of the Bad Disciples? I’ve never been to a place like that before, Hunter,” I said, in a softer weaker voice and he pulled me in for another bear hug.
“You have nothing to worry about, Kylie. I’ll be there with you the whole time. I want you to be a part of my world, princess and for that you need to meet my friends,” he said, bringing his lips close to mine again, and I was melting…I stood no chance against this man’s persuasions.
CHAPTER 23
Hunter
When we walked into the Rusty Pelican, I had my hand on Kylie’s waist while everyone else’s eyes were on us. Gunner had told me that he would fill in Axel on everything that had happened in the last few days and now it was time for me to go and face the music. It wasn’t the Bad Disciples’ tradition to simply accept people into the family, not without being authorized by the president. The fact that Kylie, an outsider, the ex of a Dragon Knights’ member…was now my woman, was something that I knew would not go down easily with the MC.
But I had no other choice. I had to face Axel and I had to introduce him to Kylie. If he did not accept her, then I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. Breaking up with Kylie was completely out of the question, and at the same time; I had sworn an oath to dedicate my life to the Bad Disciples.
I could sense that Kylie was nervous too. I couldn’t even imagine what it might have felt like for her. To walk into this badly lit bar, which was now crowded with tattooed rowdy bikers and a few skimpily dressed women.
I caught Jessica’s eye as I made my way towards the center of the bar, where Axel was sitting on his usual stool. She did not look pleased, and I grinned at her. What did she think was going to happen? That I was eventually going to get her pregnant so that she could trap me into being my woman?
I stroked Kylie’s hip to reassure her that I was there. I knew this wasn’t easy for her, but she was trying. She was trying her best to get over her fear of Motorcycle Clubs and accept my lifestyle.
“Axel,” I tipped my head at the president, who now had his eyes focused on Kylie. He was staring at her, from head to toe, trying to size her up. I knew exactly what he was thinking…that she did not belong in our world.
Glock, Gunner, Tank and Sniper were standing to the side, probably as curious about Axel’s mood as I was. I knew I had their support. We were brothers in arms and I had them on my side.
“You are Kylie Aston,” Axel was speaking directly at her. I heard her clear her throat nervously and I wished that I could help her in some way, to make this process easier for her.
“Yes,” she replied in a soft voice, keeping her eyes to the ground because she could sense everyone’s eyes on her. Axel took in a deep breath and then looked at me.
“And she is Scar’s girl,” he stated rather than asked.
“Ex,” I corrected him quickly and Axel arched his eyes sarcastically.
“She has a kid with him,” he added, to counter what I had just said. In his eyes, she was still Scar’s girl.
“He beats her up, he split her lip open,” I rebelled, in a louder growling voice because just the memory of that was enough to tip me over the edge. And I knew Axel would be sympathetic towards that, he had a soft spot for women and children and keeping them safe. Axel grunted and then looked at Kylie again, with suspicion still in his eyes.
“I haven’t been Scar’s girl for three years,” Kylie’s voice surprised us all. I whipped my head around to look at her because I hadn’t expected her to speak at all. “I got away from him when my son was just a month old and I haven’t been back since. Yesterday, he threatened to kidnap my son and I went to speak to him. He beat me up,” she was speaking confidently now, meeting Axel’s gaze with courage.
Axel himself seemed surprised by her demeanor. I was pro
ud of Kylie. This was why I had fallen in love with her. She had a soft and delicate exterior, but her true self was strong. She was as strong as any of us in that bar.
Axel took in a breath again, then he looked at me.
“And you want to claim her?” he asked.
I clenched my jaws before I spoke.
“Yes,” I said and I sensed Kylie looking up at me. I hadn’t exactly warned her about what was going to happen here. She was under the assumption that I was bringing her to a bar to introduce her to my friends. She was being shoved into the world of Motorcycle Clubs without any preparation and I was surprised by how well she was taking it.
“All right,” Axel said and we both looked at him with shock. I hadn’t expected it to be this easy. I was prepared for more questions, for more grilling…to be asked why none of the groupies who hung around the bar were good enough for me.
Axel must have seen the shock in my eyes, because he smiled now and stood up from his stool.
“If she’s good enough for you, Hunter, she’s good enough for me. I trust you,” he said and came up to me and thumped me on my shoulder. I was too surprised to say anything or even smile. Axel then turned to Kylie, who was staring at him too. I knew she was putting up a brave front, but weakening from inside. She had just been claimed by a Bad Disciple. Something she wasn’t expecting.
“You are a part of the Bad Disciples now, Kylie Aston. We will make sure that sonofabitch never gets near you or your son. You have our Club’s full protection,” Axel said and I saw Kylie’s lips beginning to stretch in a smile.
A cheer rang out in the bar, which I suspected was started by Glock. Axel and I shook hands and the drinks started being served. Church was dismissed and I pulled Kylie into my arms.
She was hugging me tightly and I stroked her hair. I could sense that she was just as relieved as I was.
“Hunter,” she said my name softly and I could barely hear her over all the noise in the bar. “I’m not afraid anymore,” she said, right before she kissed me.

CHAPTER 1
Emma
“Mommy!” Mia called brightly from the other room.
“What is it baby?” I asked. I had just placed our dinner in the oven, and I was starting to make a salad. I looked at the clock on the stove and realized it was already 6 o’clock and my husband Will was not home yet. A wave of nervousness coursed through my body. Will wasn’t exactly doing the best lately. Even though he refused to talk to me about it, I knew that his drinking had gotten worse. The signs had been there for months. He would disappear for hours and not tell me where he was. I was frustrated with him, for more than just his drinking problem, but I had refused to do anything about it for our daughter, Mia’s sake.
“Mommy! Come here!” Mia called again, pulling me from my worried thoughts.
“Coming, sweetie.” I called back.
I finished chopping up the lettuce and placed it in a bowl. I whipped my hands quickly on a towel and walked into Mia’s room.
When I entered, she was staring out the window. Her small little hands were pushed up on the glass as if she was trying to make them into binoculars.
“Daddy is back!” Mia quickly turned to face me and I smiled. A sense of relief washed over me. Good, I thought. He is here rather than at the bar down the road. I walked over to Mia and placed my arm around her, and looked out the window.
“Well that’s good baby,” I said. I searched our front yard, and bit down on my lip when I saw Will stumbling outside.
“Come on baby,” I pulled Mia gently away from the window, not wanting her to see her father this way.
“Why don’t you make daddy and I a pretty picture before dinner?”
Mia nodded brightly and plopped down at her small plastic table covered in crayons and markers. I grabbed her a new sheet of paper and placed it down in front of her. I bent down and kissed her on the forehead as she got to work. I heard the lock of the door and quickly rushed out of her room towards the entry way.
“Stay in your room baby, until I call you for dinner ok?” I called to Mia as I stood in front of Will with my hands crossed. Anger coursed through my body. How could he do this again? He knew I hated it when he was drunk. He clearly reeked of alcohol and cigarettes, and he was wobbling as he pulled off his boots.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” I whispered angrily. Will seemed to just notice that I was there and his body jolted up. He looked like a deer in headlights.
“I was just coming home for dinner,” he said with his words slightly slurred.
“You’re drunk,” I accused and he had the nerve to just shrug his shoulders. I let out a long-frustrated sigh.
“I won’t let you around Mia like this.”
He opened his mouth in protest but I shushed him before he could even start to form an excuse.
“Sleep it off in the guest room tonight,” I said angrily. Will nodded slowly and I watched him stumble into the extra bedroom. I waited a few moments until I heard his distinct snore before I called Mia for dinner.
CHAPTER 2
Emma
A loud knock on the front door startled me awake. I slowly opened my eyes and tried to regain their focus. Another thump pounded on the door.
“Mrs. Harris? It’s the Chicago Police Department. Could you come to the door, please?”
The police? A course of panic shot through my body. I quickly got up from the couch and walked toward the door, checking my reflection in the mirror near the entrance way. My wavy blonde hair was a tangled mess, thrown up in a bun. My hazel eyes looked tired and strained, and they stared back at me. I haphazardly tried to push back my stray hair that had fallen out of the bun as I reached for the door handle and opened the door.
A tall officer stood in front of me on the door step.
“Mrs. Harris?”
The officer behind him tipped his head in greeting.
“Yes. Is there something I can help you with?”
The officer looked around and then back to me. His lips were pressed into a thin line. “I’m Officer Lewis, and behind me is Officer Rodriguez.” I barely registered their names, as my attention was drawn to the Illinois state police pulling into my driveway. What the hell was going on?
Couldn’t they be any subtler about it? Their red and blue lights continued to flash brightly in the darkness. I started to count in my head… I didn’t even make it to three before the usual nosy neighbors poked their heads out of their windows. Some of them were so blatant; they just opened their front doors and waited, as though I didn’t notice them staring at the commotion. Though I couldn’t hear what they were whispering to one another, I knew that the gossip had already started. Our quiet neighborhood was filled with bored housewives looking for dirt to dish out at their book clubs and dinner parties. They loved to talk and were unfortunately always far from discreet.
I let out a long sigh as the officer cleared his throat. “Can we come in?” he said, bringing me back to the present moment. “This might be something better to discuss inside.”
I slowly nodded and led them into the living room. I shut the door and let out an intake of breath as the stares of the neighbors vanished with the click of my lock. I normally wasn’t in my neighbor’s spotlight, and I did not want tonight be the night where I started to be.
“Could I get you something to drink?” An awkward silence permeated the room. Both officers stared blankly at me.
“Why don’t you come take a seat, Mrs. Harris,” Officer Lewis said as he gestured toward the couch.
I slowly sat down on the couch and out of the corner of
my eye I saw my daughter, Mia, attempting to sneak downstairs to see what was going on. She slowly peeked her head around the corner and quickly moved back behind the wall, thinking that I did not see her. The officers sat down on the other chairs in the living room and faced me. Officer Lewis noticed my eye line and a slow smile spread across his lips. Mia peeked her head around the corner again and all I could see was her brown ringlets of curls. I looked at the officers, smiled apologetically, and walked over to where Mia was hiding. I kneeled down and my daughter’s tiny frame rushed into my open arms.
“Mia, it’s way past your bedtime.”
“But the big flashes scared me, Mommy.” Mia released her arms around my neck and looked up with me with pleading eyes.
“It’s nothing to be scared of, sweetie,” I said. “Go back upstairs and I’ll come tuck you in in a minute.” Mia slowly nodded and planted a big kiss on my cheek. Then she turned and quickly ran back upstairs.
I turned back to the gentlemen in blue, and the look on their faces told me everything. Something terrible had happened.
CHAPTER 3
Emma
My whole body shook, completely disconnected from my surroundings. Words and small phrases were floating around in my head. I couldn’t quite put anything together.
“Involved in a car crash…”
“Ma’am, your husband is dead.”
How was that even possible? I had sent him to bed the second that he had gotten home, and I thought he had stayed there even when I went to bed. After attempting to console me, the officers got up to leave, and all I could do was stand in the middle of the living room, frozen in place. When I heard the door click behind them, I was brought out of my trance and did the only thing I could do, call my sister.
